In Botswana, abortion is allowed up to 16 weeks of pregnancy, but only in specific situations:- If the woman’s life is at risk- To protect the woman’s physical or mental health- If the pregnancy is the result of rape, incest, or defilement (i.e., sexual activity with a minor or an individual unable to give consent)- If there is a high risk that the fetus has serious physical or mental abnormalitiesIn these cases, the procedure must be done by a qualified doctor at a government hospital or an approved clinic.If the reason is to save the woman’s life, protect her health, or due to serious fetal abnormalities, two doctors must give written approval. However, if the pregnancy is because of rape, incest, or defilement, no special permission from doctors is required. [7]
