What Are the Side Effects of a Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) Abortion?

Most women will experience bleeding and cramping during and after a Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) abortion.

Some women do not bleed at all and some may experience bleeding similar to menstruation after an MVA. Any amount of blood can be normal, except TOO MUCH blood (i.e. soaking four pads within two hours). We advise that you use sanitary towels rather than tampons/menstrual cups as it is easier to monitor the amount of bleeding that occurs.

It is also common to experience many different emotions after a surgical abortion, all of which are valid, and if the woman feels like she needs additional help, she should seek counseling. [1]
