What are the Different Gestational Ages for Each Method?
There is some overlap in the gestational ages for the different methods of abortion. The use of each method may vary based on geographic location, availability of equipment, provider indications, or personal preference. These are the different gestational ages for each method:
- a Medical Abortion with Pills (MA) is used up to 11 weeks’ gestation;
- a Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) is typically used up to 14 weeks’ gestation;
- an Electric Vacuum Aspiration (EVA) is often used up to 15 weeks’ gestation;
- Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) methods are commonly used beyond 14 weeks’ gestation; and
- an induction abortion, when used, is typically done for pregnancies beyond 16 weeks’ gestation. [1]
