In April 2017, United Nations experts urged the Honduran Congress to adopt progressive law reform in order to protect the rights of women and girls. U.N. experts noted the calls from several human rights groups, to lift the abortion ban and allow access to safe abortion services in limited circumstances.
Last month, Parliament in Honduras has initially approved a bill that will make it virtually impossible to legalise abortion in the country. The new measure will require at least three-quarters of Congress to vote in favour of modifying the abortion law, which is among the strictest in world.
