Is Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) Painful?

Although vacuum aspiration uses gentle suction to remove the pregnancy, yes, there is usually pain experienced in the form of cramps. The most common pain associated with an MVA is strong cramps during the procedure, which takes about five to ten minutes to complete. Local anesthesia is often used and it helps numb the surrounding area to ease the pain.

Afterwards, you need to rest in the recovery area for about 30–60 minutes. A normal recovery includes irregular bleeding or spotting for the first two weeks and cramps, similar to menstrual cramps. These may be present for several hours, and possibly for a few days, as the uterus shrinks back to its pre-pregnant size [1].
