On International Safe Abortion Day, safe2choose invited worldwide organizations to join efforts in raising awareness about the importance of providing access to safe abortion to all women. Every year, over 56 million abortions are carried on. Most of these women are denied the right to dignity and non-judgmental care. This is why we are calling on activists and abortion advocates from all over the world to speak out against any sort of social, religious, legal, economic and cultural stigmas.
We invited people to answer a simple and yet fundamental question: Why must safe abortion be available to all women worldwide? With the help of a committed designers team, we’ll turn these answers into engaging materials to be shared online.
Starting on September 11th, you’ll be seeing the answers from major organizations from the abortion field such as: How to Use Abortion Pill – International, Ipas México, Fortress of Hope Africa (FOHA) – Kenya, Colectiva Feminista La Revuelta – Argentina, Fem – South Africa, Women’s Promotion Centre – Tanzania, M de Mujer – Mexico, SOS Femme, Enfant en Catastrophe, SOSFEC – Democratic Republic of the Congo, Reseau d’Action et d’Information Pour Les Femmes (RAIF) – Democratic Republic of the Congo, Fundación Cultura de Mujer – Venezuela, and the International Campaign for Women’s Right to Safe Abortion.
Together, we are sharing our message across, that we’ll no longer be silenced, that all women deserve to be respected and treated with dignity. We are the masters of our lives and no one should be making decisions for us. Women seek abortion services for an infinity of reasons, all of which should be respected and not questioned. We’ll no longer be tolerating any violence.
During the campaign, women and abortion advocates are invited to engage with the materials produced and to share their own answers on why safe abortion should be available everywhere. The best answers will be picked by safe2choose’s team, illustrated and featured among the other organizations’ answers.
What is the International Safe Abortion Day?
It all started in 1990, when Latin American and Caribbean organizations gathered together on the V Encuentro Feminista Latinoamericano y del Caribe to discuss the importance of decriminalizing safe abortion and start saving women’s lives. September 28th was chosen for all local organizations to recall this same purpose. It was not until 2011, when the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights declared the date as an international day, and expanded the hard work worldwide.
