Letter to partners: Announcing the end of Fem’s operations in South Africa

end-of-Fem-South-Africa

Dear Partners,

We regret to inform you that Fem will no longer be in operation in South Africa as of March 31, 2018.

Fem was launched in March 2017 in South Africa and is powered by safe2choose, an international social enterprise whose mission is to prevent unsafe abortions worldwide.

Since its launch in early 2017, Fem has managed to refer over 600 women in South Africa to more than 200 safe abortion providers. On social media, our campaigns have reached more than 315,000 users and, around the streets of Gauteng, you might have seen some of our information, education and communication materials.

In collaboration with Triggerise and U-Care Medical Centres, the Fem team has worked incessantly to leverage popular technology channels and to remove obstacles between women and their decisions, so that they could easily access sexual and reproductive health services and information.

Very quickly, Fem became relevant in the South African debate on abortion. It was matter of great pride to be listed among so many respected abortion advocates, whom we’ve always admired and whom we know will continue the fight for greater access to safe abortion information and services. Again, we would like to thank you for all the trust you have put on us.

Our work would not have been successful or complete without the support of our partners and collaborators. We would like to acknowledge Sexual and Reproductive Justice Coalition (SRJC), TriggeriseU-Care Medical Centres, Umuzi Academy and Activate Change Drivers.

We would also like to inform you that we will use the month of March to close down operational aspects of Fem in stages relating to the website, social media, informing partners and on the ground collaborators.

Once again, it has been a poignant decision and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support and working to increase safe abortion information and access.

Should you have any questions, please contact Ms. Kanyisa Booi, Program Manager at Fem.

Sincerely,
safe2choose and Fem
