What is the Recovery Time for a Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) Procedure?

After an MVA procedure, there will be a relatively short recovery time in the clinic. For women who have the procedure with only local anesthetic, the recovery time is typically less than 30 minutes. For women who are given a sedative for the procedure, the recovery time may be a bit longer (30–60 minutes), while the sedation effect diminishes. Once the recovery in the clinic is completed, the woman is sent home. Some clinics may request that she have someone escort her home, but it depends on the clinic.

Many women also receive oral and written instructions on how to care for themselves after they leave. These instructions may include how much bleeding to expect, how to recognize potential complications, how and where to seek medical assistance if required, and sometimes counseling on contraceptives. If you don’t get this information, don’t hesitate to ask for it. [1]
